Our commitment to the welfare of the animals, is not just empty words. Our members are determined to do everything in their power, to give pets the care they deserve, especially for those discarded by their previous owners, for whatever reason. They also know that organization and the strong will to do what’s right, are the main ingredients for their actions to have a long-lasting impact. That’s why this year they have taken the initiative to help those cats and dogs on the streets. For this purpose, they launched the Neutering Marathon project in Hîncești. The results speak for themselves.
Even though we can agree that finding a loving home for street animals is the optimal solution to their precarious situation, the truth of the matter is that such cases are rare and far between. That doesn’t mean that those poor animals are doomed, though. Actually, many of them become some kind of “community pets” and receive food and water from residents of their neighbourhoods. That’s why neutering becomes so important.
AnimalCare Moldova organized a marathon which consisted of picking up street cats and dogs, taking them to a veterinary clinic, where they got vaccinated against rabies, neutered and then monitored through the night. To do so, a professional was enlisted who, each morning, would search for the animals, catch them safely and then take them to the clinic. After the process was completed and deemed successful, the animals would be returned to the same place.
The rest of the personnel was composed of 5 veterinary students, 9 animal care enthusiasts and other volunteers and residents of the city of Hincest, helping with the initiative either by working directly with the animals or by bringing them food and other supplies.
Even though most of the work was done by volunteers, a project of this magnitude still needed funds for functioning correctly. Here is the breakdown of the amounts:
During the Neutering Marathon project in Hîncești, 102 dogs and 8 cats were processed. 105 of them were animals living on the streets, while the rest were home pets brought by the people of the city and the volunteers. Likewise, out the total number of animals, 66 were males and 44 females. All surgeries were successful and our «patients» recovered satisfactorily over the night.
Through the great success that this project experienced, AnimalCare Moldova demonstrated once again that this type of initiative can have a huge impact. That’s why they will continue to implement such projects in the future.
